About this design

Pelli Pandiri is drawn like a Kalamkari cloth from Srikalahasti: pen lines and vegetable dyes in madder red, indigo, mustard and olive on unbleached cotton. It suits Telugu families of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana planning a traditional wedding.

Guests first see a brass kalash on bare cloth. One tap and a tree of life grows from it: the trunk rises, boughs spread, leaves unfurl, flowers open, mangoes swell and two peacocks come to perch. Then the boughs sweep apart like a wedding canopy being raised.

Inside, a mango-leaf toranam hangs over the couple's names, the families' note sits on a creeper-bordered panel, and each ceremony (Pasupu, the Pelli with its muhurtham and talambralu, the Vindu feast) hangs from its own bough of one tree. Date, muhurtham and venue are set on a madder-red field with a chalk-white muggu, where the countdown sits in four diamond cells. An RSVP form, a list of who's coming and gentle instrumental music complete it.
