About this design
Lagna Sohala tells a Maharashtrian wedding the way a Warli painter would: in chalk white on a terracotta mud wall. Guests first see the couple's names painted inside a square chauk. One tap and a chain of dancers runs out from the tarpa player, spirals round the names as the sun comes up, and whirls away to show the invitation.
Inside, the wedding day is a village procession. A line of villagers with pots, a dhol and a tarpa walks from the halad (turmeric) morning to the wedding and its seven steps, and on to the welcome feast on banana leaves. The date, muhurta, venue and dress code follow, with a countdown kept in four little huts, an RSVP form and a list of who is coming.
It suits Marathi and other Maharashtrian weddings, village and wada celebrations, and any couple who want something rustic, joyful and handmade rather than gold and glitter.
