About this design
Hina Bagh in Punjabi: a mehndi invitation in Gurmukhi that sounds like the bride's family calling you over. "ਪੀਂਘ ’ਤੇ ਆ ਬੈਠੋ", dholki with boliyan and tappe sung "ਉੱਚੀ-ਉੱਚੀ ਤੇ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੇ ਬੇਸੁਰੇ", glass vangan and a chaat cart, and the old promise that "ਮਹਿੰਦੀ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਜਿੰਨਾ ਗੂੜ੍ਹਾ, ਪਿਆਰ ਓਨਾ ਹੀ ਗੂੜ੍ਹਾ".
The design is the same henna garden: a round mandala in fresh paste that dries, flakes away and leaves a deep maroon stain, then soft sage green with fine henna-brown line work, coral, marigold and cream. The afternoon hangs on garden swings, the day, time and place are stacked like glass bangles with a countdown in four of them, and guests reply on a lace-edged card. Made for Punjabi Hindu weddings; the dholki, the chaat and the dress code can be left out.
