Now Showing – Punjabi

Now Showing in Punjabi: the viah as a grand film premiere, written in Gurmukhi the way a Punjabi film is announced, not translated line by line. The marquee reads ਹੁਣ ਵੱਡੇ ਪਰਦੇ ’ਤੇ, the poster promises a love story whose show runs a lifetime, and the music is credited to every chacha, mama, bhua and maasi. The sangeet is the ਮਿਊਜ਼ੀਕਲ ਧਮਾਕਾ with gidda and bhangra, the wedding is the ਮੇਨ ਪਿਕਚਰ and the reception comes ਇੰਟਰਵਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ. Guests book their seats at the ਟਿਕਟ ਖਿੜਕੀ, and the film ends on ਸਮਾਪਤ… ਹੋਏ ਕੁਆਰੇ ਦਿਨ.

The design is the same dark auditorium: red velvet curtains, a marquee of chasing bulbs, a film-leader countdown, ticket stubs on a strip of film and a clapperboard counting down to the day.
